A "Pause for Words"

Sweet September

I am fond of September, not because

its autumnal equinox cradles my birthday,

but because it holds the key to autumn,

opening the door to crisp nights, starry skies

cheering on football teams. Yet, it still boasts warm days,

trees bursting with crimson, yellow, and orange foliage.

It is the month where wearing shorts and cozy

flannel shirts reflect the changing seasons,

where wooly worms inch across walking paths,

where fallen leaves crunch beneath my feet. I notice

busy squirrels gathering acorns off the ground,

rejoice in putting the lawn mower away,

enjoy sweet, fresh apple cider and warm bowls

of butternut squash soup. Peruse cool fall festivals,

marvel another harvest moon.

MONTH OF GIVING for Hancock County Children's Choir's fall fundraiser

The 14th season of Hancock County Children’s Choir is underway, and happily, the organization continues to grow in membership, depth of experience, and offerings for the community. Serving students ages 5-18, the choir teaches vocal production, sight singing, public speaking, poise, and stage presence. Students are already preparing for the Light the Light’s Christmas production to be held at Mount Vernon High School on December 14 (ticket sales begin October 1).

Surpassing the 100-member mark this year, the program is flourishing. New staff member, Mr. Ashton McKenzie (M.M. Choral Conducting, M.M. Vocal Performance) increases the choir’s capacity to serve students by adding the option of private voice lessons for individuals and groups.

Month of Giving, HCCC’s fall fundraiser, is around the corner, and this year the choir is adding more options to engage the community in our work. Each year students visit local businesses asking for sponsorships as well as soliciting donations from family, neighbors, and friends. They use their creativity to raise money to support the choir: some give income from their part-time jobs, and some offer to do extra chores or jobs to earn money to donate to the choir.

This year, we are adding an opportunity for the community to participate more directly in our work. Month of Giving options will include the opportunity to sponsor a song during the concert, sponsor a student for membership or vocal lessons, or donate to a capital project. We invite you to contact us to discuss how you can be an integral part of supporting Hancock County Children’s Choir, your local children's choir. Contact us at info@hccchoir.org or 317-620-0096 to get involved.

A Quick Art Tidbit

The Two Mona Lisas Theory

The Isleworth Mona Lisa

Was there another Mona Lisa (La Gioconda) painting crafted by Leonardo? Whether you believe the hypothesis advanced by several credible mainstream Leonardo scholars that Leonardo da Vinci was working on an earlier version of the Louvre Mona Lisa (La Gioconda), you need to know the backstory of what is known as the Isleworth Mona Lisa.

The Isleworth Mona Lisa is an early sixteenth-century oil on canvas painting depicting the same subject as Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, though with the subject (possibly Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo) depicted as being a younger age.

“The painting is thought to have been brought from Italy to England in the 1780s, and came into public view in 1913 when the English connoisseur Hugh Blaker acquired it from a manor house in Somerset, where it was thought to have been hanging for over a century.

“Since the 1910s, experts in various fields, as well as the collectors who have acquired ownership of the painting, have asserted that the major elements of the painting are the work of Leonardo himself, as an earlier version of the Mona Lisa.”
