Riley Festival

10/3/2024 through 10/6/2024

The Riley Festival begins every year on the first Thursday of October in beautiful downtown Greenfield Indiana.  The event follows many years of traditions in celebrating the birth date of famed "Hoosier Poet" James Whitcomb Riley. Residents of Greenfield, Hancock County, and surrounding areas combine their talents and resources to honor the memory of Greenfield's native son.  Each year, one of Mr. Riley's poems is selected as the theme for that year's festival. The 2024 theme is “A Barefoot Boy.

The Greenfield Banking Company Entertainment Tent is a showcase for a wide variety of talent that runs Thursday thru Sunday during the festival.  The Parade Of Flowers, which has been taking place for well over 65 years, features Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation's elementary students marching downtown to place bouquets of flowers around Mr. Riley's Statue.  The statue was placed in front of the courthouse in 1918 and is the focal point of the Riley Festival.  Our regular parade will be on Saturday with over 75 units traveling from the high school through downtown to Riley Park.

A "Pause for Words"

A tree ring

The wooden ledger marks the moments,

concentric; its rigid fingers as tremulous as the days’ breath.

The years thicken, twist;

grow frail.

And how quickly the past burns,

how it lies exposed when the sentry topples over.

There is no promised future

but a steady circular path worn through

in ruts

until it’s time to start again.

"Art has been a part of human society for thousands of years, serving as a means of creative expression and a reflection of the cultural and social values of a community. Art is never created in isolation.

The arts are powerful tools that can be utilized to encourage conversation and benefit communities in many ways.

Art can be a catalyst for conversation. Art has the power to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and spark conversations. Public art installations, murals, and street art can serve as a catalyst for conversation and bring people together. They can create a sense of community and provide a shared experience for individuals from diverse backgrounds. …

Equally, a small group of people coming together for chat over a coffee, can inspire change. I am fascinated by the power of conversation. Conversations with dear friends, old friends, family and complete strangers can lead to wonderful ideas and thoughts. Add some drawing, painting, craft, music, dance… and wow!

Art can promote community. Art can bring communities together by providing a platform for engagement and collaboration. Public art projects that involve community members in the creative process can foster a sense of ownership and pride, leading to a greater understanding of different perspectives and experiences, and ultimately promoting social cohesion and empathy.

… When we come together to create and share thoughts and ideas, when we come together to produce a collaborative piece of art, we immediately connect.

Art has the potential to bring about positive change in communities. It encourages conversation, promotes community engagement, raises awareness, and inspires action.

Let’s work together to create a more vibrant, inclusive, and socially conscious community."
