A "Pause for Words"
Icy Revelation
Shoveling out the drive
another year, another foot
of snow, and I don’t think
I can take much more
of this frozen precipitation.
It challenges me on the roads,
it taunts me as I walk,
all I see is white everywhere,
and bare branches dancing
their voodoo wickedness.
I feel claustrophobic, knowing
this evilness is winning,
my sunny spirits wane –
and I grumble with each toss
of the shovel. No one my age
should have to do this,
mumble, grumble, mumble, mumble –
then, I think of those who can’t,
who’d give anything to push snow
and lift, to stand and bend, to breathe
in the fresh, frigid air, to hear the crunch
of life beneath their feet while walking
or shoveling in winter.
